The folded structures of the area of Tbilisi

Abstract Following structures of Ajara - Trialeti folded zone are represented in the area of Tbilisi (from the South to the North): Teleti anticline, Krtsanisi syncline, Mama Daviti anticline, Saburtalo syncline, Lisi anticline, Dighomi (lower Avchala) syncline and Mtskheta anticline. These folded structures are well expressed and are characterized by latitudinal or sub-latitudinal direction. Only in the northern part of researched territory, the structural axes toward the East will obtain East-South-East (Caucasian) directions. Direction change with Caucasian that is characteristic to Ajara - Trialeti folded zone is caused by convergence of structures of these systems, by compressing the bed [Stratum unit] of Georgia and more intensive plunging on the meridian of Tbilisi city and to the East. As it seems the movement of structures of Caucasian direction are more intensive, which causes directions change of axes of Trialeti structures and moving their eastern parts toward the South, in Mtskheta-Norio zone. For majority of Trialetian structures in the research territory is characterized by clearly expressed asymmetric constitution. Besides, located too southern, Teleti anticline is bended to the South, toward Artvin-Bolnisi bed [Stratum unit] and the rest are bending to the North. Accordingly, there are shown bi-directional movement of Trialeti folded zone: to the South, toward Artvin-Bolnisi bed [Stratum unit] and to the North, toward bed [Stratum unit] of Georgia. Bending of axial plane of majority structures in Ajara –Triaeti folded zone toward the North is conditioned by lower hypsometric location of bed [Stratum unit] of Georgia compared with the bed [Stratum unit] of Arvin-Bolnisi. Because of that, northern movement is more sensitive, except northern-eastern region of Tbilisi area, where southern movement is more intensive. Trialetic structures bends are plunging toward the East. Also, there can be inspected reducing of intensity of crustal folding to this direction and virgation [digitations] of folds. Structures show vivid tendencies of extension, some of them have such ending that cannot reach eastern merge of zone. All this indicates the weakness of forces that creates folding and ending of the folded zone.
